  • Fire Prevention Week 2026: Charge Into Fire Safety — Be Ready for Open House Season

Fire Prevention Week 2026 runs October 4-10, and the official NFPA theme is “Charge Into Fire Safety. Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”

For fire departments across Long Island, that means this year’s open houses, school visits, and community events have a clear message to deliver: lithium-ion battery safety.

    This Year’s Theme

Fire Prevention Week is the longest-running public health observance in the United States, sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) since 1922. This year marks the second consecutive year NFPA has focused on battery safety — a reflection of how common lithium-ion batteries have become in everyday life.

Phones, tablets, laptops, e-bikes, scooters, power tools, toys, e-cigarettes, and headphones all run on lithium-ion batteries. When used correctly they are safe, but a damaged or improperly charged battery can overheat, catch fire, or even explode. The 2026 campaign teaches the everyday charging habits that reduce that risk.

The six “charging superpowers” NFPA is promoting this year:

    • Cheap charger? Don’t chance it. Use the cord and charger that came with your device, or one approved by the manufacturer.
    • Soft surface? Hard pass. Charge on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk, or bare floor.
    • Fully charged? Time to unplug. Unplug your device when it is fully charged.
    • For tools and rides, charge outside. Charge large items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging.
    • Feels hot? Stop using it. Stop using your device if it feels very hot, starts to swell, smells strange, leaks, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds.
    • On a flight? Keep it in sight. When on a plane, keep devices where you can see them while charging. Do not charge e-cigarettes or vapes on the plane.

The campaign tagline: Plug in. Power up. Stay safe.

    Why Departments Are Ordering Now

Fire Prevention Week is one of the most visible community outreach opportunities of the year. Departments across Long Island use the week to welcome families to the firehouse, visit local schools, and connect with community groups — and every one of those interactions is a chance to deliver a safety message that sticks.

Giveaways do that work. A child who takes home a fire helmet, a coloring book, or a goody bag carries the message home to their family. A pen, a keychain, or a stress reliever keeps your department’s name in front of residents all year long.

    • Safety-focused items: clip-on safety lights, fire truck LED keychains, action bands, Fire Smart goody bags
